Self-directed Residencies
The artist in residence programme aims to bring together artists in mid or advanced career stages from all countries and all disciplnes (writing, painting, sculpture, architecture , design, multimedia and video art, new technologies, installation art, music, dance, etc) for a concentrated prriod of one to six months). This programme aims to support residents in their creative explorations, investigations and professional growth within an environment of communication and exchange.

Program dates: March 1st – December 15th, 2009 and January 15th to february 31st – 1 to 6 month residency period
Application deadline: February 18th (residency period February to July 31th) and April 30th, 2009 (residency period August to February 2010)

Fiction worshop with Sarah Van Arsdale

This workshop is designed to help you free the reigns and allow your
subconscious to go to work, so that you can dive more deeply into character and story. Each class will have time for writing exercises, for discussion of various points of writing such as setting, dialogue, and description, and for critiquing one another’s work. Together we’ll create an atmosphere of friendly criticism, with the intention of encouraging the writers to say that which is most important to them. We’ll take the work seriously, but we’ll do it with great good humor.

Beginners and more experienced writers are welcome; you can use the workshop either to generate ideas or to work on something already in progress.

Creating environment with Elisabeth Woods

This workshop program will opens debate and stimulates a far-reaching interpretation of our environment.

This fortnight will bring together, in a spirit of cooperation and respect, people who would like to work in nature or in-situ and would like to expand upon their practice or just beginning to develop their concepts.

Portret de artist: KAROLY FERENCZI

Sunt de origine Tg-Muresean nascut in 1952 si inca de copil m-a interesat in mod deosebit desenul. In clasa a V-a m-am hotarat sa devin artist plastic si incepand din clasa urmatoare m-am inscris la Liceul de Arte Plastice, apoi am continuat la „Andreescu” pictura Cluj, unde mi-am luat diploma in 1975. Paralel cu activitatea artistica am lucrat in invatamant ca profesor de desen si istoria artei. Din anul 1991 m-am stabilit in Budapesta, unde pana in prezent imi continui dubla activitate de artist plastic si pedagog. M-am gandit mult asupra intrebarilor esentiale cum ar fi de ce pictez, ce inseamna pentru mine pictura si am ajuns in ultima instanta la urmatoarele concluzii destul de grave si anume: Pictez din egoism si din frica de moarte. Pictura este sansa mea la existenta. Cred in pictura si in nemurire.

DOKU.ARTS International festival for films on art

The Filmmuseum Amsterdam and the Dutch Cultural Media Fund are pleased to announce the fourth edition of DOKU.ARTS, which will take place from 11 to 14 June 2009 at the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.

Call for entries
The call for entries for DOKU.ARTS 2009 is now open! The deadline for film submissions is
15 March 2009 (materials must be received by this date). Please go to www.doku-arts. com to download the submission form.

Theme of the festival
DOKU.ARTS explores the connections between the history of cinema and television and art. It shows contemporary cinematic portrayals and documents about artists and art, which succeed in getting close to the life and work of artists. The festival screens, promotes and discusses documentaries about all art fields: music, literature, theatre, dance, cinema, architecture, painting, sculpture, visual art and media art. DOKU.ARTS presents films and videos with intrinsic artistic value.

Festival history
DOKU.ARTS was founded in 2006 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin by Andreas Lewin. In 2008 the new director of the Filmmuseum, Sandra den Hamer, formerly director of the
International Film Festival Rotterdam, invited the festival to move to Amsterdam.

ATTIC ARTS 2009 - ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY PROGRAMME AT ICR LONDON

Attic Arts is a residency programme at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London offering time (up to 2 months) and space (the bohemian attic room of the Institute) for Romanian artists from various humanist fields to work in a major urban centre that provides a distinctive mix of cultures, of ethnic communities, of tradition and innovation in the realms of art, performance, technology, media and urban planning. The artists have the opportunity to experience the unique London environment, research innovative ideas, create new work and network with professionals in the field.

Concurrently, the resident artists will create work inspired by the local cultural context, which will subsequently be presented in the ICR London space or external premises as appropriate.

Regulations

Goals of the Programme

  • to create opportunities for Romanian artists to engage directly with British cutting edge art scene and develop a partnership project on a previously identified theme

  • to create an ICR London based pool of artworks and projects, which can be subsequently presented through the ICR global network, showcasing Romanian creativity to Western audiences

  • to foster dialogue and extend professional networks between Romanian and British cultural producers

  • to raise the profile of the London Romanian Cultural Institute in Romania and in the UK as a valuable partner for collaborative art programmes

Who can apply?

Any Romanian who is pursuing projects in: visual arts; curating and art critique; museology; music and musicology; cultural journalism; translations; architecture, urbansim and design; literature and creative writing; dance, performing arts and film; cultural heritage; cultural management; social sciences (history and the history of ideas; philosophy; sociology; psychology; anthropology etc)

What we offer

  • residency grant of 1700 Euro / person / month

  • up to 2 months accommodation in the bohemian attic room of the Institute in 1 Belgrave Square, next door to Buckingham Palace, Royal Albert Hall and the Serpentine Gallery.

  • the opportunity to explore and initiate new work

  • the opportunity to experiment new possibilities and directions in the production of collaborative work with British fellow professionals

  • grant request, signed and dated, including the amount of the requested grant, the duration of the residency and contact details of the applicant;

  • curriculum vitae including: educational background; professional experience; participations in debates, seminars, conferences, exhibitions; published works; other relevant information you consider helpful for your application;

  • application form (download the document)

  • copies of diplomas;

  • research / project proposal;

  • two reference letters

Application deadlines: 31 January and 15 June.

Selection Criteria

  • the research / project proposal and its relevance for current approaches in the field

  • curriculum vitae - educational qualifications and professional experience

  • ability to identify partnerships or collaborations with individual artists or organizations from Great Britan, with whom can start or develop a project

  • preparedness to deliver within of 3 months of the residency completion an innovative artwork or project to be shown on ICR London or external premises as appropriate

  • ability to communicate in Romanian and English

The selection of applicants is made by a jury formed by: Mik Flood - Independent cultural policy analyst, Gabriela Massaci - Director RCI London, Simona Nastac - Project manager RCI London.

The jury will meet on 12 February 2009 for the applications received by 31January 2009. The results will be announced in maximum five days from this date.

There will be awarded 8 residencies per year.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

Center sodobnih umetnosti Celje (Center for Contemporary Art Celje) is
a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2004 with the main mission to
initiate, develop and promote contemporary visual arts in the local,
regional and international context, as well as to re-articulate and
re-contextualize the heritage of local conceptual and post-conceptual
practices that make the foundations of the Center’s activity.

Situated only one hour from the capital city of Ljubljana, and being
one of the most representative institutions for the production and
display of contemporary visual arts in the Stajerska region of
Slovenia, the Center represents a creative hub devoted to arts,
culture and theory, as experienced in the specific conditions of
current social, political, and economic situation. Under the auspices
of the City Council of Celje and its Cultural Department, the Center
has been actively engaged in the project-based cultural programming in
cooperation with the partners across the region and beyond.

Center for Contemporary Art Celje is a complex of three exhibition
venues in the downtown area of Celje: Galerija sodobne umetnosti
(Gallery of Contemporary Art, since 1993), Likovni salon (Likovni
Salon Gallery, since 1963), and Galerija Racka (Racka Gallery, since
2006). One of the Center’s main activities is its Artist-in-Residence
programme (up to two months) initiated in 2005.

ABOUT THE OPEN CALL

Center for Contemporary Art Celje announces the International Open
Call for exhibition project proposals to be held in the Likovni Salon
Gallery in Spring 2009. The applications will be reviewed by a
selection team (Nevenka Sivavec and Irena Cercnik, curators of the
Center for Contemporary Art Celje, and Marko Stamenkovic, independent
curator) and the results will be announced by 9 March 2009.

The Open Call is addressing contemporary visual artists, and
groups/collectives from Slovenia and abroad who are invited to submit
a solo-show proposal. The Call is not limited by any specific topic,
and is open to all media (painting, sculpture, installations,
photography, digital animation, sound-based art, video, interactive
and interdisciplinary projects). The priority in the selection
process will be given to the recent production that challenges a
social environment, engages and interact with various audiences and/or
communities. The Center for Contemporary Art Celje will provide the
travel and accommodation costs for the winning applicant, printed and
electronic invitations for the exhibition’s opening, and will publish
an exhibition catalogue.

ABOUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Artists are advised not to send the original artwork, but only the
documentation (photographs, sketches, video and audio material, etc.)
that will present the project’s idea in detail. The received
documentation will not be returned.

The application material (in English) should include:

- Year of production
- Artist statement
- Technical details (equipment needed for the exhibition set-up)
